What are Career Pathways?
A process to evaluate and develop career pathways resulting in skills gains that are recognized by employers. Pathways provide career ladders for youth and adults that result in employment.
Five years ago, the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE) released the report Pathways to Prosperity: Meeting the Challenge of Preparing Young Americans for the 21st Century calling for an intensive effort on the part of employers, educators, and government leaders to build pathways linking work and learning that are aligned with regional labor market demand.
Nationally, career pathways are taking off. Check out this article from Forbes on the new way of doing business. North Carolina has been at the forefront in creating career pathways with the help of both the NC Department of Public Instruction and the NC Community College System and is now certifying career pathways.
In a statewide effort, workforce development boards, in collaboration with local stakeholders, are reviewing established pathways and/or creating new ones that will build a skilled workforce for high-demand industries to meet current and future regional needs.
Planning Committee
The High Country Workforce Development Board is convening a planning committee of key stakeholders from business and industry; education; economic development; workforce development; and government to ensure the career pathways (academics and training) are aligned with high-growth sectors of the local economy.
